Should Your Workplace Have a Happy Hour?

A rising number of companies are developing a relaxed company culture which includes some sort of after-work drinking, like a happy hour. However, there is a fine line between encouraging professional social mingling and throwing a free-for-all party.

The Trend of Workplace Happy Hours

Encourage Employee Community

Holding a company happy hour, either at the office or at a nearby pub, provides your workers with a relaxed time to joke and mingle naturally with one another. It’s also a great opportunity for different departments to co-mingle and network comfortably. These events can also discourage cliques from forming because everyone has a chance to talk to everyone else.

Be Careful of Employee Backgrounds

There is the chance that someone in your office is a recovering alcoholic or currently struggles with alcohol. Some people are able to function for a while as an alcoholic without revealing their secret to friends, family, or coworkers. Employees should be encouraged to participate in the social situations while also understanding that they do not have to drink to be welcome.

Overdoing It

Drinking with coworkers can be a fun idea. Maybe employees will get the chance to discuss current events or network a little. However, if an employee tends to get tipsy or drunk very quickly, then an employer may want to consider holding a happy hour where employees can choose a non-alcoholic beverage. No one wants to miss anything, but they also really don’t want to make a fool out of themselves and potentially threaten their job.

If you believe your employees are abusing alcohol outside of work or during workplace happy hours, consider doing a random drug test. The test would help you find out which employees to watch carefully, discuss behaviors with, or simply replace.
