Host a fall health fair

If you’re a Lawrence employer, you know what fall means. No, we’re not just talking about KU football games and bonfires. Open enrollment season is just around the corner. One way to kick off the season is an employee health fair. Health fairs can educate employees on wellness tips and encourage them to take steps toward preventive (and sometimes diagnostic) care. If you’re interested in hosting a health fair for your employees, here are some steps we recommend:

Invite the health community to participate

Hospitals and private practices often jump on the opportunity to participate in a health fair. It’s a win-win. They get to meet and talk with your employees. Your employees get to know possible health care practitioners and receive education on staying healthy. In the end – you benefit from having both of them there when it translates to healthier employees who are proactive about their health.

Host the health fair on campus

A health fair doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. Just assign a coordinator to invite guests and host it in your common area. If you have a cafeteria or lobby, that is sufficient space for a health fair. Just line the walls with tables and let your vendors have a booth.

Don’t forget about drug & alcohol testing

You may associate health fairs with the more traditional vendors like physicians and hospitals, but as drug & alcohol testing experts, we like to come too! Not only can we educate your employees on the effects of drug & alcohol and how drug testing works – but we can also give them the information they need in the event they have teens at home who also might require our services.

Encourage a complementary test or discounted rate of service

Ask some of your vendors if they’d provide a complementary service or test in order to attract more employees. Some chiropractors might do quick shoulder massages. Others might have abilities to check blood sugar or blood pressure. We’d also be happy to attend and offer a discounted flu shot for anyone who comes by. The possibilities are endless – think outside the box!
