You Have Your CDL; Now What?

Congratulations! You have joined drivers across the nation who have chosen commercial driving as their profession. You passed your course and the driving test, so you’re ready to start driving, right? Not quite. There are still some tests you’ll need to pass before you get behind the wheel of a big rig. One of those tests is a DOT physical to ensure that you’re healthy enough to hit the road.

What is a DOT physical?

A DOT physical is a test required by the Department of Transportation. It’s different from a DOT drug or alcohol test because it looks at your general overall health. CDL drivers have to pass a drug and alcohol screen in order to drive, but the DOT also requires a Medical Examiner’s Certificate that is renewed every 2 years.

What is a DOT physical looking for?

When you a get a DOT physical, the examiner will test that you have:

  • All your arms, legs, feet, and hands; or a skill performance evaluation certificate
  • No hand or finger impairment that would hurt your ability to operate machinery
  • No medical history of diabetes mellitus that requires insulin, or a diabetic/vision exemption
  • No current high blood pressure
  • No mental, organic, nervous disease or psychiatric disorder
  • 20/40 vision or better, with or without glasses or contacts
  • Can recognize the standard colors of traffic signals i.e. green, amber, and red
  • No history of drug use or alcoholism
  • No history or current diagnosis of arthritis
  • No diagnosis or history of epilepsy
  • And more

Why do I need a DOT physical?

Your medical examiner extensively looks at all of these factors, in addition to others, because they want to make sure you’re reliable to operate big machinery. It helps to have the knowledge needed to drive a large commercial vehicle, but knowledge and ability are sometimes two different things. It’s important for you to be safe on the road and it’s equally important that other drivers feel just as safe. You’ll need to carry your physical results with you at all times in case something happens and you need to show your test results.

This physical can only be performed by an FMCSA-certified examiner. Make sure you’re choosing the right office before you go in for your physical. Contact Test Smartly Labs if you have any questions!
